Facebook to Spend $60M on Solar Powered Drones

Solara Facebook Drone

Social networking giant Facebook is currently in talks with Texas based Titan Aerospace about a deal which could see the corporation deploy a sizeable 11,000 high altitude, solar-powered drones into our skies.

The lightweight Solara (meaning ‘Of the Sun’) which can fly at 65,000 ft for up to 5 years at a time apparently provides the ideal solution to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of bringing ‘the internet’ to some 5 billion ‘undeveloped’ people who don’t know what they’re missing.

Described by their creators as ‘atmospheric satellites’, the 60 metre wide self sufficient drones are capable of performing weather, communications and yes, you guessed it – surveillance related tasks, although it’s reportedly only the communications side of things Mr Zuckerberg is currently interested in, despite the tempting privacy invading potential should they be linked with his social megasite.

So, ‘Facebook drones’, a philanthropic platform for the the expansion of internet reach, or the laying of the foundations of the future sinister cyber control grid that will know exactly who, what, why, when and where?
