Gaga’ comeback after her Reprogramming, er, I mean broken hip, with the first single off the forthcoming ArtPop. Picking up where she left off with her ongoing reveal about the nature and price of Fame – she’s back to the dark murky realm of the Occult Elite of course.
And the same slew of symbols are imaginatively regurgitated every Gags’ video. This carousel of theatre is for sure art directed by Inez and Vinoodh (who sound like they could be a pair of kinky Hindu gods) but directed ? No. Gags and her Masters at Universal, it is clear to those with eyes to see, are firmly the ones really directing this show. There’s an blitz of occult symbols here and blatant mind control references. Again. It’s not like all her other videos haven’t offered the same up, Born This Way, Marry the Night, You and I, Telephone etc, the videos all contain loads of mind control references. The lyric ‘Live for the applause’ is the perfect cynical anthem for the vapid celebrity saturated pop culture lapped up by the mass market. Indeed the could video stand as a stylistically sarcastic taunt at the ‘sheeple’ for lapping up the lamestream slop served to them.
FAME in all Its Guises
The Core Personality: The mad dishevelled brunette locked in an asylum type setting with only a mattress for company represents Gags the core personality from which all the other ‘alters’ to come are spun out from by her handlers through trauma, abuse and electroshock. She certainly looks like she has been through the wringer. Entertainment slaves like Marilyn are often naturally brunette before they are transformed to externally embody their blonde Venus/sex kitten personas.
‘The ultimate alter ego of the artist’ is represented by the mythic Commedia Del Arte ‘sad clown’- the Peirrot ‘face’ of Applause. Gags’ own version is particularly deranged of course, and recalls infamous clown faces of the tragic Anna Nicole Smith and Heath Ledger’s The Joker. It’s hommage on one hand to pantomime and Liza Minelli but it’s also a nod to psychotic drugs being administered and the creation of multiple personalities!
The most blatant mind control saga in this video is the deranged Marilyn Monroe in the birdcage. Ok so people in birdcages is shorthand for the personality contained. in a cage. not free…So Gag’s Marilyn has just had a particularly heavy electroshock session by the looks of it.

Just an Illusion: The allusion to Magic is two-fold in Applause. Magic tricks are just tricks, so when Gags comes out of a hat, we get what she’s saying. Fame is all an illusion! You are being hood winked. Fact: Top Hats are also a symbol of elite society.
The other kind of Magic really on show here in the video and it’s spelt with a K on the end as in Magick and the is kind Aleister Crowley was into. And thus the classic symbols of Satanism are foistered upon us in the usual music video way: mainly the head of Baphomet: Through out the video there are very many frequent very quick flashes of Gags backlit as a dark angel figure. THIS arguably has the cumulative subliminal effect of seeing the shape of Baphomet’s head every few seconds. Baphomet is a very ancient symbol possibly hardwired into some deep level of our consciousness, like the Cross. Anyway, It is all well and good and appropriate because Gag’s dark angel is probably Lucifer and by the looks of it she’s getting bit of an orgy-ritual together…
Black Swan hybrid/Golden Goose/Siren
What he have here is an imaginative hybrid of archetypes Emerging from a hair covered Egg (a recurring Gaga motif), symbolizing the course of Nature perverted, Gags is the Satanic music industry’s golden goose, so far, every egg/hit she lays has the Midas Touch.
She’s also reminiscent of a Siren, the half bird half human Underworld creature from Greek mythology that lured sailors to their doom upon the rocks with their beautiful song. There’s a nod towards ‘Black Swan’ here, perhaps alludes to the dark ‘cracked’ personality theme that runs through the Natalie Portman film. The fact this genetic hybrid breathes fire conjures also the ancient alchemy of dragons and the creation of a new myth, a new God – part Siren, part dragon, part human.
The whole video builds to a crescendo wave as is the wont of a ritual, to when a sacrifice is offered. In this case it’s Perez Hilton’s leg (Gags currently has a stunt fight going on with the gossip queen)Gags is perhaps the Virgin archetype here, with a gory twist, she’s holding what looks like a severed leg, complete with flesh dingles, but only seconds earlier was an Olympic kind of torch, with feminine, virginal roses coming out of it.
The Ritual Climax approaches by 3.15secs including a glitter bomb and Gags giving an electroshock/Demon possession re-enactment for her zombie dancers (Electro Shock Therapy can be used alongside trauma to split the mind into multiple personalities)
In the choreographed ‘popstar at work’ sequence the aggressive cold sexuality really grabs you…well, her, actually, the hands that are grabbing Gags as part of her SO CONCEPTUAL OUTFIT, remind us oh so subtly of hidden ‘handlers’, literally very ‘hands on’ all over their no1 music industry slave. The literal ‘choker’ is a nice touch. One imagine it tightens if she forgets a dance step…or doesn’t cover one eye enough…cue evil laugh.perhaps Simon Cowell’s.
So yeah some shadowy hands can switch her personality at whim, like a switch…. cos the next SECOND those hands are now conjuring Gags as VENUS out of a cauldron.
YES, Venus, the Roman goddess of Love and Femininity and her Egyptian predecessor Isis is a central mystery school figure recently stamped very discreetly all over Rihanna’s midriff. We know this is Venus due to her strategically placed SHELLS.
After the electro shock frenzy (Gag’s psychotic orgasm you could say) and the leg/Olympic torch sacrifice /offering, there’s right at the end some frantic and very-cool-for-the-little monsters-type-hand-movements, spelling out very quickly ARTPOP and the last frame is this (if Gags was already the Empress of the One Eyed Salute now she is the Grand Tzaress. There’s more ‘One eyes’ than you can shake a masonic compass at in the vid.
Between plenty of One Eye action, the Baphomet head and an electro shocked, caged Marilyn, it’s clear that FAMA according to Gaga and her industry mentors is pretty dark sided. Also it’s clear that STILL nothing in pop culture is cooler than mind control and occult symbols. So cool. like who cares what they mean!
